Poetry Love

One of my favorite classes in High School was POETRY. I loved it, and then I left it. I didn’t look back until this year. It’s been a weird year. Lots of turning inside for me, and it’s quite interesting what I’m finding.

Poem are powerful. They do things to the heart and mind. I’ve started sharing a poem on Sundays on my Instagram stories, which has gotten me looking up more poems, which has gotten me wanting to learn more poems. And dare I say it, WRITE some poems myself. Here’s one of my first attempts at Poetry since the ninth grade:

I hope y’all catch the poetry bug! I hope you’ll share with me what you find and what you write!

xo, Mary

p.s. A few good articles talking about the benefits of memorizing and learning poetry.

Nature is powerfully healing. Getting outside is m Nature is powerfully healing. Getting outside is my go to cure all. Lately I’ve been favoring this writing set up. I’ve got my comfy chairs lined up against open French doors. This morning my view is dappled sun and intermittent rain. Fresh air and whispering palms are my muses. I deserve—its’s hard to state that I deserve this, but it’s true—I deserve to make my writing time as romantic and cozy and joyful as my situation allows. I think it’s worth bringing pleasure and beauty into our daily routines. I invite you take a deep breath and ask yourself how you can make one of your jobs more pleasant or lovely today. You deserve it.

Writing tip!! Give your characters items of person Writing tip!! Give your characters items of personal meaning that enhance their backstory.

This pearl necklace was my grandma Mary Beesley’s. She was a quirky, tough, lovely lady. She taught me lamb is delicious with mint jelly, even if I refuse to eat the fat chunks like she did. I think of her when I wear this necklace. And I also think it’s lucky when I wear it to football games.

These are the kind of details we can give our characters that make them more real and interesting.

I talk a lot about grounding. (Grounding or earthi I talk a lot about grounding. (Grounding or earthing is a therapeutic technique that focuses on realigning your electrical energy by reconnecting to the earth.)

The research about this new and growing, but I’m a huge believer!! Just google it if you don’t believe me. Or better, go swim in the ocean and see how you feel. Forest bathing anyone?!

Touching and reconnecting with our Mother Earth is healing for body, mind, and spirit.

This Sunday is the September equinox, the first day of autumn and the day when the northern hemisphere starts to spent more time dark 🌙 than light ☀️ .

I’m sending out my newsletter tomorrow with ideas for being more mindful this change of seasons. Link in bio if you want to subscribe.

Happy grounding 🌏 and happy fall 🍁 🍂
